Giambattista Tiepolo was the last of the great Venetian decorators purest exponent of Italian Rococo, and possibly the greatest artist of the 18th century. Tiepolo was just as valuable as a draftsman, his powers of invention were limitless and its object is unmatched. His enormous output of frescoes and altarpieces was partly due to the practice (for example, Rubens in front of him) a little painting 'Modelli', which, in the case of customer claims can be carried out by a qualified assistants under its own control. Many of these MODELLI and sketches survive, along with hundreds of drawings. He wrote very little portraits. He also etched many plates, and, with Marco Ricci, was one of the founders of the great Venetian school of the 18th century etching.
